Upper West Side Apartment

Originally, this Upper West Side apartment was a warren of small rooms and smaller hallways.  By merging the rooms and halls, we improved the circulation while enlarging the spaces.

A cramped kitchen, once buried in the dark middle of the building, emerges spacious and functional, now with natural light pulled from the living room.  The master bathroom is convertible:  a run of sliding teak and ribbed glass doors close off the component functions.  But when opened, they convert the various wet spaces into one big suite.

In the media room’s built-in bookcase, perforated metal doors hide the A/V equipment.  The perfs let in the IR remote signal while letting heat and audio escape.
