For this Soho duplex, we combined two flats with a new rear extension. The resulting residence expands as you move through it. For instance, given the low entry, we dropped the floor of the rear extension to gain ceiling height.
The space expands further with an outdoor room off the living room. A chimney with indoor and outdoor fireplaces bisects the rear glass wall. And finally, the treads of the new stair cantilever from a bank of cabinets.
As a result of dropping the floor, we gained a surplus of garden levels: a sunken terrace outside the living room, an arboreal backyard beyond, and a green roof off the master bedroom.
