A web of windowless hallways ate up a third of the footprint of this prewar apartment. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the unit’s only fireplace was buried in one of the halls.
We love this kind of project because the room for improvement is huge. For example, by simply removing walls between dark halls and windows, the rooms jumped from small to large. And sunlight reaches every corner.
We moved the kitchen from the far end of a dark hall to the heart of the apartment. This lets the owners live in the light, while an etched glass partition screens any kitchen mess. The new layout enlarges the living and dining spaces while filling the whole apartment with natural light.
